Tom Petty is an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist.  He is the front
man of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and has had a successful solo career.  Petty has
recorded numerous hit singles and is an influential rock music pioneer.  He is also
known for his live performances.  In 1993, Tom Petty released a compilation album.
The album featured some of the bands most famous hit singles, but also some new
tracks, including the massively successful Mary Jane’s Last Dance.  It is Petty's best
selling album to date and was certified 10x Platinum.

Ready to Die is the debut studio album of rapper The Notorious B.I.G.  It was released
on September 13, 1994, under Bad Boy Records.  This was The Notorious B.I.G.'s only
album released during his life.  He was murdered in 1997, and his second album Life
After Death was released days after his death.  Christopher Wallace needed only two
albums to cement himself as one of the best MCs of all time.  The lyrics and beats used
in Ready to Die were amazing.  This album is routinely listed as one of the greatest and
most creative of all time.  Ready to Die spawned many classic rap songs, but Juicy and
Big Poppa paved the way for commercial success.  Other notable hip-hop albums of the
1990’s are Tupac’s All Eyez on Me, Eminem’s The Slim Shady L.P., and Snoop Dogg’s
Doggystyle.  To date, Ready to Die has sold around 5 million copies worldwide.

8. Santana - Supernatural (1999)

Supernatural is a concept album released by Santana in 1999.  It was conceived by Clive
Davis and featured Santana on guitar surrounded by various vocal and instrumental
stars.  Some of the musicians featured on the album include Rob Thomas, Wyclef Jean,
Eric Clapton, Eagle-Eye Cherry, Lauryn Hill, Dave Matthews, and Cee-Lo.  In late 1999
the album reached the #1 spot for 12 non-consecutive weeks.  It is one of the top selling
records of the 1990’s and to date has sold 27 million records worldwide.  The album
won 8 Grammy Awards, including album of the years.  Santana and Rob Thomas won
for their collaboration on the song Smooth, while Santana and Everlast won for the
song Put Your Lights On. 

7. Dr. Dre - The Chronic (1992)

The Chronic is the debut album released by hip hop producer and rapper Dr.
Dre.  It was released on December 15, 1992.  The Chronic was recorded by
Dr. Dre following his departure from N.W.A and Ruthless Records over a
financial dispute.  Dr. Dre's production on the album is noted for founding and
popularizing the G-funk sub-genre within gangsta rap.  The Chronic is widely
considered to be the best and most influential hip-hop record of all time.
However, it has sold fewer copies then any other album on this list.  It has total
sales reaching 4 million units worldwide. 

6. Celine Dion - The Colour of My Love (1993),
Falling Into You (1996), & Let’s Talk About Love (1997)

Celine Dion revolutionized the world of love ballads and pop music in the
1990’s.  She was one of the best selling artist of the 90’s and her three albums
The Colour of My Love (1993), Falling Into You (1996), and Let's Talk About
Love (1997) sold a combined 83 million copies worldwide.  The legacy of her
albums will not die and in 2007 Celine was named the best selling female artist
of all time.  She has sold over 200 million records worldwide.  This goes to
show that people of all cultures, faiths, and identities can relate to a good love
song.

5. The Lion King Soundtrack (1994)

The Lion King is a 1994 American animated feature produced by Walt Disney.
The music is written by Elton John and Tim Rice, with a score composed by Hans
Zimmer.  The songs Circle of Life, Hakuna Matata, and Can You Feel the Love
Tonight highlight a great children’s album.  The Lion King soundtrack was the
best-selling album of 1994.  By 1995, it had sold over 10 million copies in the
United States and quickly became the highest selling soundtrack from an animated
feature.  The album also won the Academy Award for Original Score and Original
Song.

4. Alanis Morissette - Jagged Little Pill (1995)

Jagged Little Pill was the third studio album released by Canadian singer Alanis
Morissette.  It was a break-through album and spent twelve non-consecutive
weeks at number one.  In 1996, it became the best-selling album of the year
and had five hit singles, You Oughta Know, Ironic, You Learn, Hand in My
Pocket, and Head over Feet.  It was the second-best-selling album of the 1990s,
behind Shania Twain's Come on Over.  By January 2005, the album had sold
33 million units worldwide.  Morissette’s music is also extremely popular in
Australia, Belgium, Finland, France, Portugal, Sweden, and many other areas of
the world.  Jagged Little Pill was ranked 327 on a recent list of the 500 Greatest
Albums of All Time.

3. Green Day - Dookie (1994)

Dookie is the third studio album and the major label debut by American punk rock band
Green Day.  It was released on February 1, 1994.  The album helped to propel Green
Day into mainstream success.  Dookie is one of the most complete records ever created.
Every song on the album is exceptional and every member of the band contributes to
their sound.  Dookie produced five hit singles, Longview, Welcome to Paradise, Basket
Case, She, and When I Come Around.  Many of the musical videos made from this
album became extremely popular.  Dookie has sold over 15 million records worldwide.
The album also won the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album in 1995.

2. Metallica - Self Titled Album (1991)

Metallica is an American heavy metal band from Los Angeles, California, formed in
1981.  Metallica's early releases included fast tempos, instrumentals, and aggressive
beats that placed them as one of the "big four" of the thrash metal subgenre alongside
Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax.  The band earned a growing underground fan base in the
1980’s and reached large scale success with the release of their fifth studio album, titled
Metallica.  It would become one of the greatest achievements in rock history.  The
powerful guitar, bass, and drums, surrounded by James Hetfield’s lyrics are amazing.
 
The albums first single Enter Sandman is routinely listed among the best rock songs ever
created.  Other great tracks on this record are The Unforgiven, Nothing Else Matters,
Wherever I May Roam, and Sad but True.  The album spent four consecutive weeks at
#1 and is the band’s best selling album to date.  It has sold 22 million copies worldwide.
